BUILDING A WORTHY CHARACTER

Character is the essence of our inward being. It is the sum total of an individual’s personal qualities. It shapes choices, defines actions and affects reputation in the society. No matter how hard a man tries to mask himself, his character would eventually uncover him! And it is either a man has a good character or he has none. Bad character is synonymous with lack of character. In every field of human endeavor, character is a key consideration before people are entrusted with high responsibilities. In fact, it is the first consideration. A man with high abilities but no character is a high risk. That is why some students with great mental capabilities don’t end up graduating. They are probably worthy in learning but deficient in character and so, couldn’t earn a degree. Imagine a sharp technological mind preferring to hack into people’s systems instead of helping to reinforce protective firewalls. Or a sound banking mind deploying his skill towards perpetrating fraud instead of ensuring sound financial operations. What is lacking in both cases is character. Let’s get this straight: where issues of character are concerned, it is not only the big things that matter, little things also count! Are you in the habit of coming late to work but signing in as having come early in the attendance register? Do you indulge in carrying sheets of photo copying paper home for personal use and say it doesn’t matter? Do you abandon your work and then turn up with an arranged sick report? That is character failure! You sure need character rebuilding. Good character is about accountability and responsibility. Reflect on this.
